In 1986, Dennis Tippmann Sr. came in to the paintball industry and took the paintball world by storm. In the world of all pump paintball guns, Dennis brought out a fully automatic called the SMG-60. Since the beginning with the SMG-60, world's first fully automatic paintball gun, Tippmann has brought out hit after hit. The biggest change came out in 1998, called the Model 98. The Model 98 revolutionized paintball and revolutionized Tippmann. Most of the Tippmann paintball guns you see today are based on this simple, yet durable and reliable platform. From the Model 98 Platinum Series to the most upgradable paintball gun ever, the X7. The internals of the Model 98 have served millions of people worldwide including the US Army. Recently, they have even brought out different technology in paintball guns such as the TPX pistol and the X7 Phenom. The TPX is quickly becoming the pistol of choice around the world, while the X7 Phenom offers the same as at X7, but with an all new engine on the inside that will surprise you.

Glossary of Tippmann Paintball Gun Terms
Tippmann Firing Modes
- SingleShot: Each pull of the trigger will fire one shot but you must manually pump the gun between every trigger pull to re-cock the gun.
- Semi-Automatic: Each pull and release of the trigger will fire one shot.
- 3 Shot Ramping: After 3 consecutive semi-auto trigger pulls, each trigger pull will then fire 3 shots each as long as the trigger continues to be pulled at least 5 times per second (2005 PSP Rules).
- Auto Response: Fires one shot on the pull AND the release of the trigger. If the trigger is HELD for more than 1/4 of a second then no shot will be fired on the release.
- Turbo: Fires one shot for each pull of the trigger until the time between trigger puls is less than 1/4 of a second at which point it will fire on each trigger pull AND trigger release.
- 3 Shot Full Auto: After 3 consecutive trigger pulls the trigger can be held for full auto firing. (2005 NXL Rules)
Feed Systems
- Direct: Balls feed directly into the breech, with no assistance
- Cyclone: Balls are "forced" into the breech by the paddles inside the cyclone feed. This system uses extra air from the shot cycle to turn the paddles.
- Cyclone Capable: Is able to accept the cyclone feed system as an upgrade.
- Magazine: Balls are pushed into the breech by spring tension.
Trigger Types
- Mechanical Trigger: A system of springs and levers (sear) with a weighted trigger pull.
- Air Assisted Mechanical Trigger: A system of springs and levers with a weighted trigger pull and includes an air powered piston that helps to reset the trigger to its start point faster.
- Electronic Micro switch: The trigger pushes a micro switch. The micro switch activates an electronic circuit board, which then cycles the sear action.
- Magnetically Activated Trigger: A magnet in the trigger passes by a sensor. The sensor activates an electronic circuit board, which then cycles the sear action.
- Hybrid (Mechanical or Magnetically Activated) Trigger: This trigger activation is set by the safety/mode selector switch. In semi-auto mode, the trigger acts as a Mechanical Trigger. In other firing modes, the trigger acts as a Magnetically Activated Trigger.
Valve Activation Mechanisms
- Mechanical Sear: The sear is mechanically moved and releases the spring loaded rear bolt. The rear bolt moves forward and opens the valve.
- Solenoid Controlled Sear: An electronic board energizes a solenoid, which moves and is linked to the sear. The sear releases the spring loaded rear bolt. The rear bolt moves forward and opens the valve..
- Actuator Pin: A pin or piston is used to open or close air flow to the valve and bolt.
Body Styles
- Mil-Sim: Body incorporates weaver rails to mount accessories. Can sometimes include, or have the option to add, shoulder stocks and barrel shrouds.
- Sport: Smaller and lighter weight
- Pump: Has a pump handle and requires a pump action between shots
- Pistol: Compact internals and barrel. Body holds paint and gas supply.
Rail Types
- Dovetail: Original style rails. 3/8 inch wide. Mounts have slide adjustability and have no place locking feature.
- Picatiny: New style rails. Current military specs. 7/8 inch wide. Grooved so mounts lock into place and won't slide.
Engine Styles
- Blow Forward: Air pressure is used to move the bolt forward. Spring pressure is used to move the bolt back.
- Dump Valve: During the firing cycle, once the bolt has moved forward past a certain point, the stored firing pressure is released, or dumped, and the ball is pushed down the barrel.
- Inline Blow Back: The bolt, valve and hammer are in a horizontal design. Air pressure from the valve opening is used to return the hammer to the cocked position.
- Poppet Valve: A spring holds a seal and seat closed. A hammer is used to open.the seal.
- Self Contained Poppet Valve: A spring, seal, seat, and other orings are all contained in an internal body.
Grip Types
- Basic: Mechanically trigger, semi-auto only.
- Response Trigger: Air assisted mechanical trigger, fires in a burst style.
- E-Grip: Electronic micro switch trigger, has programmable firing modes.
- H.E. E-Grip: Hall Effect Magnetically activated trigger, has programmable firing modes.
